Frequently Asked Questions

I've never heard of Shorinji Kempo, what is it?

it's a fantastic Japanese Martial Art based on a system introduced into China from India many years ago that was practiced by the monks of the famous Shaolin Temple. It was developed and augmented in Japan by the founder, Doshin So, in the late 1940's, and is now studied by 1.5 million people in 28 countries around the world.

It combines 'Hard' techniques, as in Karate, with 'Soft' techniques, as in Judo, to form a very effective all round system. The techniques are based upon inderstanding the scientific principles of how the human body works, this enables a smaller weaker person, to overcome a much larger stronger aggressor, making it ideal for both men and women alike.

Shorinji Kempo also teaches senior students a form of Shiatsu massage called Seiho.

Underpinning the training and techniques is a philosophy that is fundamental to the art. This philosophy teaches self-reliance, mutual co-operation and respect, not only when training but in our homes our work and communities too.

What will i get from Shorinji Kempo?

Different people study Shorinji Kempo for different reasons; some do it to keep fit, some do it to learn self-defense, some do it because they like the philosophy and some use it as all round personal development.

Whatever the reason you can expect to see personal growth in three main areas;

  • A Healthy Body
  • A Healthy Mind
  • Self Defense

You'll also have the chance to make many new friends. One of the fundamental beleifs of Shorinji Kempo is "Live half for yourself and half for others"; training in pairs puts this principle in to practice. It is key to Shorinji Kempo for practical and philosophical reasons but it also means there's lots of opportunity to get to know people.

Many life-long friendships (and even a few Marriages!) have begun in a Shorinji Kempo Class!

What would be expected of me?

No Experience is necessary, although you would need to be sure you have a reasonable level of fitness - if in doubt see your doctor.

All that is expected is that you leave the worries of the day behind you and try your best durring the lesson. Nothing of any value is achieved over night so you should not expect instant success.
