6. Public Lecture And Demonstration Events (Embu Kai)
Once Shorinji Kempo was structured as an organization, albeit a rudimentary one, before long it commenced activities focused on non-members. The December 22, 1949 public lecture and embu was the first demonstration ever for non-members.
On that day, from one to three in the afternoon at the Tadotsu Middle School Lecture Hall, Kaiso lectured before the school principal, the school's instructors and about 800 students. In the remaining time afterward, kenshi showed practical demonstrations of Shorinji Kempo. This kind of public demonstration later became taikai, birthing a movement directed toward non-members. Public embu demonstrations became a mainstay of how kenshi make Shorinji Kempo known more generally, but it was the content of the embu demonstrations at Tadotsu Middle School that would provide the foundation to the contents of all later demonstrations.
The key moment in realizing this public demonstration stems from the social conditions of the time. At the time, society was dangerously turbulent, and violence from the occupying troops was frequent. Robberies for money and
assaults on girls and young women by occupying troops were also frequent. The small harbor town of Tadotsu on the Setonai Sea was no exception, and the young women and girls of the town had to sustain tremendous anxiety. As a counter to this -- and in response to a request from the school - Shorinji Kempo put on a demonstration to show self-defense techniques. The embu demonstration certainly aimed at spreading Shorinji Kempo, but the public demonstration came about only because the request on the school's side and the way of thinking on the Shorinji Kempo side matched.
Afterwards, Shorinji Kempo spread its influence among young people, especially among high school students.
